‘Absolutely remarkable’: No one who got Moderna’s vaccine in trial developed severe COVID-19.

Biotech company Moderna announced the final results of the 30,000-person efficacy trial for its candidate vaccine: Only 11 people who received two doses of the vaccine developed COVID-19 symptoms after being infected with the pandemic Coronavirus, versus 185 symptomatic cases in a placebo group. That is an efficacy of 94.1%, the company says.

Moderna also says that its candidate vaccine had 100% efficacy against Severe disease. There were zero such COVID-19 cases among those vaccinated, but 30 such cases in the placebo group.

Moderna plans to file a request for emergency use authorization (EUA) for its vaccine with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and is also seeking a similar green light from the European Medicines Agency.

“This is excellent news”, explains Dr. Yael Vidal of Vidal Medical Concierge, a private practice of Concierge Medicine located in Juno Beach , Florida and serving the nearby areas. “We are thrilled to learn about this positive development, which may greatly assist in fighting this pandemic.”

First ‘milestone’ Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech offers 90% protection

The first effective coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid-19, a preliminary analysis shows.

The developers – Pfizer and BioNTech – described it as a “great day for science and humanity”.

Their vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries, and no safety concerns have been raised.

The companies plan to apply soon for emergency approval to use the vaccine.

Vidal Medical Concierge continues to update its patients with regard to such important developments. As a Concierge Physician for Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens as well other nearby regions, Yael Vidal MD consults her patients with regard to their ongoing medical concerns and also regarding CoronaVirus and Covid-19 related concerns.

FDA gives emergency-use approval to Eli Lilly COVID-19 Drug; Supplies Will Be Limited

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the thumbs-up to a drug designed to prevent people with mild to moderate COVID-19 from getting sicker.

The drug, a monoclonal antibody, will be available to people 65 or older or those with underlying health conditions. Supplies will be short, and distributing the medicine fairly will be a challenge.

The FDA is allowing the drug on the market under its emergency-use provision, which requires a lower standard of evidence than outright approval.

This antibody is made by Eli Lilly. President Trump got a similar medication made by Regeneron — but that product is still under review at the FDA.

At Vidal Medical Concierge, located in Juno Beach and serving Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, and the nearby areas, we continue to monitor the latest developments in treatments for COVID-19, and continue to advise the patients of Dr. Yael Vidal with regard to relevant new treatments.

FDA approves Gilead’s Remdesivir as coronavirus treatment

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gilead’s antiviral drug Remdesivir as a treatment for the coronavirus.

In May 2020, the FDA granted the drug an emergency use authorization, allowing hospitals and doctors to use it on patients hospitalized with the disease even though the medication had not been formally approved by the agency.

The intravenous drug has helped shorten the recovery time of some hospitalized Covid-19 patients. It was one of the drugs used to treat President Donald Trump, who tested positive for the virus in October 2020.

Remdesivir will be used for Covid-19 patients at least 12 years old and requiring hospitalization, Gilead said. Remdesivir is now the first and only fully approved treatment in the U.S. for Covid-19.

At Vidal Medical Concierge, we continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation as well as any new treatments or remedies for it. CVS and Walgreens to help distribute Covid vaccines to nursing homes

The federal government has made a deal with retail pharmacies CVS and Walgreens to help distribute coronavirus vaccine — once one or more gets authorized — to long-term care facilities like nursing homes.

The two drugstore chains are the best placed to send out mobile units to vaccinate seniors and other vulnerable people on site, said the deputy chief of staff for policy at the Health and Human Services Department.

Vidal Medical Concierge, located in Juno Beach, Florida, monitors the most recent developments in this important field of Covid-19 vaccines and possible remedies. Study shows first proof that a safer UV light effectively kills virus causing COVID-19

Researchers in Japan offer first proof that Ultraviolet C light with a 222 nm wavelength — which is safer to use around humans — effectively kills the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Other studies involving 222 nm UVC, also known as Far-UVC, have so far only looked at its potency in eradicating seasonal coronaviruses that are structurally similar to the SARS-CoV-2 but not on the COVID-19-causing virus itself.

At Vidal Medical Concierge of Juno Beach, FL, we continue to monitor the latest developments with regard to such new technologies. Yael Vidal MD is the lead physician of Vidal Concierge, and provides Concierge Medicine services to the residents of nearby Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and other areas.

CDC advises states to prepare to distribute Covid-19 vaccines in “late October”

Interesting news this week, as the CDC has notified public health officials around the United States to prepare to distribute a potential CoronaVirus vaccine as soon as “late October”. The CDC has also provided planning scenarios to help states prepare, and used the terms “Vaccine A” and “Vaccine B” in its communications.

Apparently, the CDC has hinted that the COVID-19 vaccines supply “may be constrained”; and has further advised the states on who should get vaccinated first, namely, healthcare professionals, essential workers, national security “populations” and long-term care facility residents and staff.

At the Concierge Physician practice of Vidal Medical Concierge, we monitor the developing updates about COVID-19 and associates risks, as well as the Covid-19 vaccinations being developed and the CoronaVirus cure and medicines that are also being developed. FDA authorizes first Covid-19 diagnostic test with a Testing Card similar to pregnancy tests

The FDA issued an emergency use authorization for the first COVID-19 antigen test where results can be read directly from a testing card, similar to a pregnancy test. This simple design is fast and efficient for healthcare providers and patients and does not require an analyzer.

How it works: A healthcare provider swabs the patient’s nose, and then twirls that sample on a test card with a testing reagent added. After waiting 15 minutes, the healthcare provider reads the results directly from the testing card: One line indicates a negative result; two lines indicate a positive result.

In our Concierge Medicine practice for Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens area, we are always on the lookout for new and innovative approaches that can improve patients’ health. Of course, not all new tests are immediately available over-the-counter, and it takes time from an FDA approval to a final product that is available to physicians.

The concierge medical practice of Yael Vidal MD MBA is located in Juno Beach, Florida, and is suitable for patients who reside in the area, including in North Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Island, Singer Island, Jupiter, and Palm Beach Gardens. Moderna Vaccine Produces Antibodies in Trial of Older People

Moderna Inc. presented new data from an early trial that provides the first evidence that its COVID-19 vaccine stimulates the immune systems of older people.

In a phase 1 trial, Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine produced “consistently high levels” of neutralizing antibodies (a key component of the body’s protective response) in older adults. Antibody levels in people over 55 years old were comparable to those seen in younger adults.

The findings are important because older adults often do respond as well to vaccines as younger adults.

Here at Vidal Medical Concierge, we continue to monitor closely the most-recent news about attempts to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
